Still Got It: Staying Confident and Relevant in the Age of AI

If you're 40+ and have quietly asked yourself, “Am I supposed to know what ChatGPT is... and is it coming for my job?” you're not alone.

It’s hard not to feel a bit off balance with all the AI chatter flying about. One minute it’s deep fake voices, the next it’s actors striking over AI-generated film scripts. Somewhere in between, you’re just trying to get through your workload without needing a tech degree or a crisis nap.

What’s Actually Going On?

Yes, AI is changing work and fast. It’s understandably shaking up industries like entertainment and publishing. But for most of us in traditional professional roles i.e. finance, HR, project management, consulting it’s less about losing your job and more about learning how to enhance it.

Used well, AI is like having an incredibly efficient assistant. One that doesn’t need sleep, gets straight to the point, and might even make your month-end report a little less painful.

“But I’m Not a Tech Person…”

Good news: you don’t need to be.

This isn’t about becoming a coder or suddenly loving jargon. It’s about curiosity and confidence. If you’ve adapted to hybrid meetings, new systems, and inbox chaos over the years you’ve already proved you can flex with the times.

Think of AI tools like new colleagues:

  • A bit robotic

  • Possibly too eager

  • But actually very useful when given clear instructions

Start with small wins.

  • Try ChatGPT for summarising long reports

  • Use Copilot to draft emails

  • Let Gemini prep your meeting notes

You don’t need to master it just get it working for you.

Staying Relevant Without Losing Your Mind

Here’s what I recommend to my coaching clients:

  • Tinker, don’t overthink. Play with tools and see what clicks. No pressure.

  • Find use cases that matter to you. Writing, reconciling, analysing it’s all up for grabs.

  • Keep learning, your way. Bite-sized videos, newsletters, or a good podcast are more than enough.

  • Reframe the fear. Instead of “Is AI replacing me?” ask “How can I use it to amplify what I already do well?”
